style=\"font-family: Avenir-Light;\">Les incommodes, 2026<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-family: Avenir-Light;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-family: Avenir-Light;\">&#8220;In &#8216;Les incommodes&#8217;, Laurence A\u00ebgerter has selected from the Autochrome collection of the Archives de la plan\u00e8te a series of portraits that appear innocent at first glance but are particularly jarring when viewed through a contemporary lens: a naked Black woman from Djibouti, a naked albino in Vietnam, a refuse collector, a man from Benares (India) \u2013 perhaps an Untouchable \u2013 and children working together on a loom in Damascus.<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-family: Avenir-Light;\">These portraits are anything but mundane; they exude the Western condescension of the early 20th century, which reproduces in images the archetypes it has itself forged and disseminates them through photography.\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-family: Avenir-Light;\">This series is genuinely unsettling, yet the artist redeems the subjects just as much as she mitigates the violence of the gaze directed at them through the technical process employed.\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-family: Avenir-Light;\">The softness of the lithophane serves to erase the \u2018documentary\u2019 brutality of the original incommodes&#8217;, Laurence A\u00ebgerter a choisi au sein des autochromes des Archives de la plan\u00e8te des portraits innocents en apparence mais particuli\u00e8rement violents \u00e0 l\u2019aune de nos regards contemporains : une femme noire, nue, de Djibouti, un albinos au Vietnam, nu \u00e9galement, un ramasseur d\u2019ordures, un homme de Benares (Inde), peut-\u00eatre un Intouchable, des enfants travaillant ensemble sur un m\u00e9tier \u00e0 tisser \u00e0 Damas.<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Avenir-Light;\">Ces portraits sont tout sauf banals, ils transpirent la condescendance occidentale du d\u00e9but du XX<sup>e <\/sup>si\u00e8cle qui reproduit en images les arch\u00e9types qu\u2019elle a elle-m\u00eame forg\u00e9s et les diffuse par la photographie.<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Avenir-Light;\">Cette s\u00e9rie est v\u00e9ritablement incommode mais l\u2019artiste r\u00e9pare les mod\u00e8les autant qu\u2019elle att\u00e9nue la violence du regard port\u00e9 sur eux par le proc\u00e9d\u00e9 technique employ\u00e9.<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Avenir-Light;\">La douceur de la lithophanie s\u2019emploie \u00e0 faire disparaitre la brutalit\u00e9 \u00ab documentaire \u00bb des clich\u00e9s originaux.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Laurence A\u00ebgerter<\/strong><br \/>\nWhile researching for &#8216;Poor Maria&#8217;, I discovered a series of portraits which stroke me their beauty at first glance but which, in the next seconds, made me feel unconfortable.<br \/>\nAll these images are containing elements that seem to correspond to situations of social exclusion, children labour, sexual oppression, precarity of income and health.<br \/>\nThe photographs have been taken all around the world, respectively in Asia, middle East, Africa, Europe and India.<br \/>\nThe portraits I selected are spanning almost a life time, from early youth to the older age.<br \/>\nThe combination of this different elements combined give an universality to this ensemble, which I called &#8216;Les Incommodes&#8217;.<br \/>\nIn a later stage I wish to realise a common frame for the five lithophanes, as a
