Schutzmäntel (protective coats)

The three Schutzmäntel produced by the artist for this exhibition refer to the mantle worn by the Virgin of Mercy and used to protect the humble and the weak.

Covered with symbolic motifs from different cultures and eras, evoking protection, strength and hope, these textile coverings envelop three sculptures.

The artist chooses vulnerable figures to take care of: Premières Funérailles (The First Funeral) by Barrias, Bacchante couchée (Reclining Bacchante) by Clésinger (in the main gallery) and Petite Fille pleurant (Weeping Girl) by Bartholomé (in a downstairs room).
