Soleils couchants sur la Seine à Lavacourt, 2020

This tapestry, Soleils couchants sur la Seine à Lavacourt (Setting suns over the Seine at Lavacourt), is inspired by a painting realised by Claude Monet in 1880, exhibited in the Musée du Petit Palais in Paris, on the back of this wall. This representation of the reflection of the sun on the water prompted Laurence Aëgerter to respond in a mirror-like fashion. She plays with the asymmetry of the pattern and disrupts our perception with effects of texture and shine. In her interpretation, the sun is repeated five times, like a ricochet, prolonging the motif so dear to Monet.

This work was made on the occasion of the exhibition ‘Ici mieux qu’en face’ at the Musée du Petit Palais in Paris, in 2020-2021.
