Invited by the Centre des monuments nationaux for a photographic commission at Montmajour Abbey in 2023, I realised a series of photographs in the heart of the abbey church, the cloister and the rock cemetery.
I was delighted to renew my acquaintance with these places, which had left a strong impression on me during visits in my youth.
To express as closely as possible the intensity of the abbey’s beauty and the energy it exudes, I wanted to add an extra materiality to my photographs.
Thanks to the use of inks with special characteristics, silkscreen printing enabled me to enrich my images with treatments that are dear to me, because they detach them from their usual immobility. Making use of phosphorescence, shimmering, alternating matity and brilliance, and a slight gravelly relief, the photographs appear different and constantly renewed, depending on the time of day, the position of the viewer and the light source they receive.
The permanent impermanence built into the very nature of the works echoes the invisible energies I project into them.
Refuges, Elixir, le Vide et le Plein, Matin d’hiver, Les Sentinelles… are thus for me connected to an existential and in-temporal experience of Montmajour Abbey.
