Pastorale

Pastorale is a ‘trompe-l’oeil’ of the reverse of a stretched tapestry.
The classic scenery of a ‘pastorale’ (an 18th century idyllic rural scenery with a young shepherd) becomes an abstract landscape of colourful yarns.

The photograph could be laid against the bottom of a wall, as if it is waiting to be hung.

Before studying at the art academy I studied Art History and my thesis was a research about ‘trompe-l’oeil’ paintings from the Dutch Golden Age.
Pastorale is an homage to the ‘trompe-l’oeil’ master, Cornelis Gijsbrecht (Antwerp, ca. 1630 – ca. 1684), and his ‘Reverse of a painting’, in the collection of Kunstmuseen Copenhagen.
